As the holidays approach, along with it comes “Pancreatitis Season” for veterinarians across the country. Veterinarians tend to see a spike in cases of pancreatitis in dogs and cats that coincide the fat-rich feasts that are served during the holidays.

In its simplest definition, pancreatitis is defined as inflammation of the pancreas. The major function of pancreas is to secrete an enzymes that break down dietary proteins, fats and sugars and prepares them for further digestion and absorption.

One of the major risk factors for this disease in pets is thought to be the ingestion of a fatty meal which in this particular case is the often the result of dogs being fed the “trimmings” and/or skin from traditional holiday foods such as Turkey, beef and pork dishes.

The main clinical signs a pet owner may observe include anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. It is a potentially life threatening condition.

So please have a safe and joyous holiday season but refrain from allowing your pets to indulge too much!
